How to clean boxing gloves ?

Most people who are training in boxing reach the moment that they need to think about how to wash their boxing gloves. Keeping your boxing gloves clean is something essential. If you don’t clean your boxing gloves between workouts, your boxing gloves will start smelling bad. A foul smell is difficult to remove, even with soap. But such an unpleasant situation could have been entirely avoided by following simple tips for handling your boxing gloves.

Suppose you didn’t make sure to clean your boxing glove from time to time. The bacteria have already multiplied in your boxing gloves, and we will assist you in getting rid of odor and dirt and teach you how. Prevent it.

Can we wash our boxing gloves with water ?

In general, it is not a good idea to clean your boxing gloves with water, and we are not recommending you to do so. Moreover, many generally consider any wet cleaning of such products to be improper. There are reasons why people are afraid to wash their boxing gloves in the washing machine or soak them in the tub or bucket. Here are a few of the reasons :

Tip 1

First of all, rinsing your boxing gloves can damage the exterior material of the boxing gloves if the boxing glove’s material is artificial leather. In that case, the surface will likely crack during drying or as a result of aggressive washing. If it is a natural leather boxing glove, it will likely warp and lose its original appearance.

Tip 2

As for the filling, boxing gloves padding is an essential part of the gloves and is supposed to protect your hands from injuries while training or to fight. Soaking or rinsing the boxing gloves can cause the filling material to stabilize and get hard if the fill of the boxing gloves will stabilize and does not heal after drying. Washing the boxing gloves can cause us to lose their padding. Boxing gloves without padding are useless as they can no longer perform the function of softening the blow.

Tip 3

Well, and most importantly: if we wash the boxing gloves with water, they will need to dry out after rinsing for a very long time (between 3 and 7 days until they are completely dry). The gloves need to dry appropriately during this period. If the gloves do not dry appropriately, they will become a popular surface for bacteria and Microorganisms that like a dark and moist environment. You will need to try to speed up the drying process.  We will tell you a little later in this article how we can make it happen. Additionally, if you have daily boxing training, it can be a bit of an issue, and you will need to own another pair of boxing gloves.

As we said earlier, we are not recommending washing your boxing glove with water, but if you decide to do it, we prepared few essential rules for doing so:

Tips for washing your boxing gloves with water ?

As we said earlier, we are not recommending washing your boxing glove with water, but if you decide to do it, we prepared few essential rules for doing so:

Tip 1

Washing your boxing gloves with soap and water is the most effective way to get rid of the smell. You are only going to clean the outside of your gloves. We recommend you use two buckets of warm water. In one of the buckets, you will need to have a small amount of soap dissolved in it. The other bucket will have plain hot water. You will want to submerge your gloves in soapy water for about five minutes. You can massage the gloves to break up the dirt and remove the dirt from the gloves. Once you have washed the gloves, you will want to submerge them in plain hot water (not higher than 40 degrees). The submerging process will help to close up the leather pores, thus making them less smelly.

Tip 2

When you are washing your boxing gloves, the water temperature you are using needs to be not higher than 40 degrees.

Tip 3

If we said, earlier it can take time for the inner side of the gloves to dry out. Try to avoid water to get inside the boxing gloves.

Tip 4

Clean the outside of the gloves with a soft sponge, don’t use a hard brush. You can ruin the material of the gloves.

Tip 5

Use a dry hard brush to rub the inner side of the gloves.

Tip 6

It’s not recommended at all to wash your gloves in the washing machine. It can ruin them.

Tip 7

You should also never put your gloves in the dryer. They will fall apart after a few cycles inthe dryer.

Tip 8

If the gloves are not dry enough, you can place them in a place with good air circulation, don’t try to speed up the drying process by putting them by the heater.

Why do your gloves stink ?

Like any good pair of leather shoes, your boxing gloves need to have a process of being broken in. A new pair of gloves will have protective materials that are not very breathable. Because of the unbreathable material, your gloves will be a trap for moisture, sweat, and bacteria inside of them. The sweat will eventually rot the leather of your gloves. The more you use your gloves, the faster they will break-in.

When you first buy your gloves, they will have a new leather smell. The smell of something new is always pleasant for a few days, but it will soon become a pungent odor. This is a result of bacterial growth. Bacteria love to use your glove as a breeding ground. The worse the bacteria smell, the worse the condition of the glove. Your gloves will start to smell worse and worse as they age. The fact that your gloves are starting to be a bit smelly is completely natural. But there are ways to prevent this from happening and extend the life of your boxing gloves.

How to prevent your gloves from smelling bad ?

If you want to keep your gloves in good condition and keep the foul smell away, you need to care for them. You should not think about how to wash gloves and get rid of the odor if you develop the habit of properly handling your boxing gloves. Here are few tips on how to maintain your boxing gloves :

Tip 1

When you finish your workout, don’t put on your boxing gloves with all of the other sweating equipment. You don’t want that your gloves will be soaked in sweat. It’s better to separate the gloves from the other equipment.

Tip 2

Don’t leave your boxing gloves in your bag when you arrive home. If you don’t take the gloves out of the bag, they stay with the sweat and become a refuge for bacteria.

Tip 3

The gloves need to hang out in the air to dry. You can help them to dry with a crumpled newspaper, hairdryer, or shoe dryer. These methods can speed up the drying of gloves after washing.

Tip 4

Do not wear wet gloves for training: Moisture combined with sweat will give the bacteria an ideal environment for rapid reproduction.

Tip 5

Treat your gloves periodically with an antibacterial spray to prevent it. You can apply the spray on the hand and only then put it on a glove. You can use disinfectant gel, sold in pharmacies, and even alcohol.

Tip 6

Wrap your hands with boxing bandages: they will absorb most of the sweat, and their rinsing will be much easier.

Tip 7

It will be great if you will be able to take a shower not only after the workout. It will be great if will be able to do a shower before you start to train. We know that sometimes you can’t shower before your training. Make an effort to wash your hand properly before you wear your boxing gloves.

Tip 8

As we mentioned earlier, clean your boxing gloves between workouts, you can even use the steps we mentioned at the start of this article.

Tip 9

Make sure you wear a glove that fits you. If the glove doesn’t fit well, there is a chance that your hand will sweat when you use it. Gloves that don’t fit can lead to the bad smell of boxing gloves.

Please note  that from our experience, if you will use the tips above, you won’t need to worry about your boxing gloves being stinky.
